Minoring In Life

Every day is full of lessons. We started writing them down.

Two weeks until the Orlando Heart Walk!

meganstacey:

Heart disease research has affected me personally. I mean that in the sense that I was born with congenital heart defects (ventricular septal defects, to be exact) and had open heart surgery at the age of five to repair them. Sixteen years later, my scar is hardly noticeable and I’m able to live at 100% normal life. I would REALLY appreciate it if you pledged me on the walk, or even better, registered to walk yourself!

You can donate online here. Thank you!

Today I learned that I have to wake up at 5:00am to catch a bus to the walk. I also learned that survivors of heart disease get a free hat at the event. Cool! Please donate.

Drugs and such

Today I learned that aspirin has been proven to reduce the risk of cancer by at least 5%. Should you be taking aspirin everyday to help fight cancer? Probably not because aspirin is also a blood thinner… so you know, that wouldn’t be fun if you were let’s say… on your period? or prone to hemorrhaging? On a related note, about 75% of all drugs used today were not “meant” to do what they do. Meaning, most benefits of drugs were discovered as side affects. A few decades ago, a study was done on a group of men and women to study a new drug that was supposed to help with asthma… after the clinical trial was done, more and more men came to ask for refills of this drug. This usually doesn’t happen after a clinical trial and why weren’t the women asking for more? What was then thought to be an innovation in treating asthma is now called Viagra.
